Wedding Reception Heaven and Hell PDF Print E-mail

As a guest at many weddings over the years and also in a professional capacity providing casino themed wedding entertainment, I have inadvertently become qualified to pass judgement on the condition of one of our most traditional institutions...the wedding reception.

I have become acutely aware of how the customary wedding reception format has become locked in time-honoured convention, failing to cater to the intellectual and emotional stimulation that modern living now requires us to expect.

Of course the importance of marriage as a social and religious institution cannot be denied and a wedding is an occasion to celebrate an institution of incalculable importance. Of course this is what a wedding is all about,

I am not suggesting that we over egg the importance of the reception, but as every new bride spends countless hours labouring the minutiae of each and every detail, spare a thought for the one thing that condemns each and every wedding with a predilection to banality...This one thing is so important, yet it is too frequently given little or no consideration. This one thing I refer to, is of course, the choice of evening entertainment.

The problem is that a disco or a live band, as the sole source of entertainment for wedding guests, does not provide the environment to encourage interaction and conversation. As soon as a the alcohol starts to flow and the mind numbing thumps from the oversized speakers stifle all communication that cannot be shouted or screamed across the dance floor then each wedding becomes every wedding.

Very often a couple fail to realise that quite a large percentage of the guests are going to be elderly and probably won't care much for loud music. Indeed, the more sophisticated musical palette of today's youngsters mean even they identify very little with the limited diversity on the song lists that seem to haunt every wedding.

Gossip Girl returns on September 13th, and in this interview, Jessica Szohr, who plays the humble and "normal" Vanessa on the show talks about her beauty regimen and playlist. Also, her movie Piranha 3D hjts theaters tomorrow!

What is your beauty regimen?

Jessica: My skin is pretty sensitive, and I travel a lot, so being on flight and there’s all these germs and having makeup when you’re on set all day being reapplied all day long. A lot of times when I’m not at work I like to let my face breath and not put makeup on. I’m big on washing my face at night and using a lot of moisturizer. I try to switch every 3 or 4 months, but I like Dermalogica and Arcona and believe it or not but I saw an infomercial one night and I ordered Meaningful Beauty by Cindy Crawford and that’s a great line as well. I’m big on going to bed with a clean face.

What is your fitness regimen?

Jessica: I enjoy yoga a lot, not even for the workout. I started doing it a couple of years ago and I could see the definition in my arms and my legs when I would do it so I felt like I was getting a good workout. On top of that, it’s so peaceful and good for my mind. I go yoga or sometimes I’ll just go to the gym in my building and put a treadmill on a big incline and walk for an hour while watching TV or reading a script or a book. Ill do that if I don’t have time to make it to a class. I try to balance out what I eat during the week. I’m not the healthiest eater, but I try to watch what I eat during the week. I kind of splurge on the weekends and eat french fries and pizza.

What's on your playlist right now?

China mourned the deaths of more than 1,200 people killed in a mudslide caused by heavy rains last week as storms are forecast to hit China’s southwestern Sichuan basin.

The State Council, China’s Cabinet, and the Ministry of Culture ordered flags lowered to half-staff and all public entertainment suspended today to pay respect to victims of a landslide in Zhouqu County in Gansu province Aug. 8. A total 1,239 people are known to have died and 505 are missing in the northwestern province after the mudslide. A mourning ceremony was held at Zhouqu near the debris at 10 a.m. local time today.

Chinese President Hu Jiantao, former president Jiang Zemin, and eight standing members of the political bureau, the Communist’s Party’s top decision body, joined the nation in lamenting victims this morning in Beijing, the China Central Television reported. Thousands have died in mudslides and floods this year as downpours inundated regions across China.

The death toll in rainstorms that began Aug. 11 in Longnan City of the province rose to 33 with 63 people missing, state- run Xinhua News Agency reported today.

Rainstorms will hit the northern area of the Chongqing municipality, parts of Hubei and Hunan provinces by tomorrow morning, the meteorological center said in an e-mailed statement.
